Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) Card Review: Is It Worth the Hype?

The Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) is one of the most strategically unique cards in the Gundam Card Game — and it’s not because of its raw stats. It’s because of what it costs you to play it: nothing.

Card Overview: GD01-002 Stats

The Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) is a Blue Legend Rare (LR) Unit from the Newtype Rising set. Here’s what you’re working with:

  • Card Number: GD01-002
  • Set: Newtype Rising [GD01]
  • Color: Blue | Type: UNIT | Rarity: LR
  • Level: 7 | Cost: 6
  • AP: 5 | HP: 4
  • Trait: (Civilian)
  • Link: [Banagher Links]
  • Zone: Space / Earth

What Does It Do?

The Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) has two effects — and the first one is what makes it one of the strongest cards in the game.

Special Deploy: When playing this card from your hand, you may destroy 1 of your Link Units with “Unicorn Mode” in its card name that is Level 5. If you do, play this card as if it has 0 Level and 0 Cost.

On Attack: Choose 1 enemy Unit. Rest it.

The Free Level 7 — Why This Is Game-Breaking

Normally, Level 7 Cost 6 is expensive. But this card is almost never paid for at full price. Here’s the pipeline:

  1. Deploy Unicorn Gundam (Unicorn Mode) — GD01-005 — Level 5, Cost 4. A solid mid-game unit on its own.
  2. On any later turn, play Destroy Mode from your hand — sacrifice the Unicorn Mode — and drop a Level 7 AP 5 unit for zero resources.

Your opponent planned around the resources you were supposed to spend. Instead, you put a Level 7 into play on a turn where they expected nothing. That swing in resource advantage is the best single-card effect in the current card pool.

Attack Effect: Resting an Enemy Unit

Every time Destroy Mode attacks, you choose 1 enemy Unit and rest it — taking it offline for that turn. Against Blocker-heavy decks, this neutralizes their key defensive piece before your attack resolves. Against tempo decks, you’re removing an attacker every turn the Unicorn Gundam survives.

Who Pilots It?

Banagher Links (GD01-088) is the designated Pilot — Level 5, Cost 1, +2 AP and +2 HP.

His effect: When Linked — draw 1 card.

Every turn you have the Link Unit established, you draw. Banagher pushes Destroy Mode to AP 7, HP 6. For a card that cost zero resources to deploy, those stats end games. And when Destroy Mode is eventually destroyed as a Link Unit, Banagher returns to your hand — ready to be paired with your next threat. The resource efficiency never stops.

Best Deck Strategies

The Unicorn Pipeline (Core Build)

  • 3–4x Unicorn Gundam (Unicorn Mode) GD01-005 — your pipeline trigger
  • 3–4x Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) GD01-002 — the free Level 7 payoff
  • 3–4x Banagher Links GD01-088 — pairs with both Unicorn forms, draws on link
  • 2x Full Armor Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) GD03-010 — Level 8, Repair 3, the endgame closer

Supporting Cards

  • Riddhe Marcenas (GD01-089) — bonus AP when the unit has Repair, synergizes with Full Armor
  • Delta Plus (GD01-006) — (Earth Federation) Trait link covers the Pilot slot when Banagher isn’t available
  • Intercept Orders (GD01-099) — mass rest on low-HP enemies pairs perfectly with Destroy Mode’s attack rest effect

Market Value

The Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) LR is one of the more accessible Legend Rares in the Newtype Rising set. The LR+ variant commands a significant premium for collectors. Check the live market price on Card Commander for current values.

Final Verdict

Competitive Rating: 9/10 — The free deployment mechanic is the best resource cheat in the game. A Level 7 AP 5 unit for zero resources is not fair, and the attack rest effect keeps pressure on every turn it survives.

Collection Value: 8/10 — Core card in one of the game’s premier combo archetypes. Holds value well as the Unicorn deck remains competitive.

If you love combo decks and playing cards that make your opponent do math they didn’t plan for — the Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) is your archetype. Master the pipeline and you’ll be competitive at any table.
